The Supreme Court has certified its month-old ruling allowing the Biden administration to end a cornerstone Trump-era border policy to make asylum-seekers wait in Mexico for hearings in U.S. immigration court. It was a pro forma act that has drawn attention amid near-total silence from the White House about when, how and even whether it will dismantle the policy. The sparse entry records that justices voted 5-4 that the administration could scrap the “Remain in Mexico” policy, overruling a lower court that forced the policy to be reinstated in December. The Biden administration had no immediate comment.

A Dutch woman has been sentenced to three years in prison for donating several hundred dollars to a group that supported the militant group al-Shabab in Somalia. The sentenced imposed Monday on 38-year-old Farhia Hassan was far less than the 8-year sentence sought by prosecutors. She was convicted earlier this year by a jury at federal court in Alexandria of conspiring to provide material support to terrorists. Prosecutors said she was one of about 15 women who gathered in an online chatroom and regularly contributed small amounts of money to support al-Shabab militants in Somalia and Kenya. In all, prosecutors say she donated about $300. Defense attorneys sought a sentence of time served, or about nine months.

An Iowa-based youth basketball league has agreed to settle a class-action lawsuit filed by former players whose coach secretly recorded them undressing or obtained nude photos of them. Gregory Stephen is now serving a lengthy prison sentence for sexual exploitation of minors. Guy Cook, the lawyer for boys who played Barnstormers Basketball of Iowa games from 2005 to 2018, said the league has agreed to settle the case by establishing a fund of more than $1 million to compensate victims. A judge must sign off on the agreement before it's finalized.

Tom Brady spoke to reporters for the first time since the start of training camp, keeping most of his answers brief during a seven-minute session in which he discussed — among other things — the knee injury that's expected to sideline center Ryan Jensen for much of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers season. Second-year pro Robert Hainsey is competing with another young lineman, Nick Leverett, to replace Jensen, a first-time Pro Bowl selection in 2021. Brady stressed while Hainsey is working hard the former Notre Dame standout still has to earn the job with a strong camp and preseason.

A New Mexico jury has convicted a man in the 2016 death of an Albuquerque girl who was strangled, dismembered and set on fire in the bathtub of her mother’s apartment on her 10th birthday. The jury deliberated less than four hours Monday before returning with guilty verdicts on all charges that 37-year-old Fabian Gonzalez faced in Victoria Martens' death. Prosecutors say he faces up to life in prison. Gonzales was charged with reckless child abuse resulting in death, tampering with evidence and conspiracy to tamper with evidence in the case. He dated the girl's mother and moved into their apartment a month before Victoria was killed.

The Tampa Bay Rays have acquired left-handed reliever Garrett Cleavinger from the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for minor league outfielder Germán Tapia. The Rays says Cleavinger, who spent parts of the past three seasons in the majors with the Dodgers and Philadelphia Phillies, will report to Triple-A Durham. To make room on the 40-man roster, right-hander Luke Bard was designated for assignment. Cleavinge made four appearances for the Dodgers this season. He was 0-1 with a 10.38 ERA over 4 1/3 innings.

West Virginia cities and counties have reached a $400 million tentative settlement with three major U.S. drug distributors. The cities and counties accused the distributors in a lawsuit in state court of fueling the opioid epidemic. The companies are AmerisourceBergen, Cardinal Health and McKesson. The funds will be distributed over 12 years. Wheeling attorney Bob Fitzsimmons and Huntington attorney Paul Farrell Jr. announced the settlement Monday and said the individual counties and municipalities still have to approve it. Last month, a federal judge ruled against Cabell County and Huntington in similar claims. They are not included in the settlement announced Monday.

The Palestinian Health Ministry says at least one Palestinian has been killed and another wounded during an Israeli military raid in the occupied West Bank town of Jenin. Israeli forces have carried out regular operations into Jenin in recent months that the military says are aimed at dismantling militant networks in the wake of several deadly attacks inside Israel. The raids often ignite gunbattles with Palestinian militants. The Health Ministry did not provide further information on the individual who was killed late Monday. The Israeli military referred questions to the paramilitary Border Police, which did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

A hard-right Kansas lawmaker who’s clashed with Republican leaders is poised to win a spot on the November ballot as an independent candidate for governor with help from allies of Democratic incumbent Laura Kelly. State Sen. Dennis Pyle, of Hiawatha, submitted petitions with nearly 8,900 signatures to the Kansas secretary of state’s office Monday for verification that the signers are registered voters, as required. State law requires 5,000 valid signatures. Pyle was a Republican until June, and his bid would complicate presumed GOP nominee and state Attorney General Derek Schmidt's efforts to unseat Kelly. Some Democrats are hoping Pyle and Schmidt split the conservative GOP vote, boosting Kelly's chances.

Spain has unveiled a proposed a new Official Secrets Law to replace one enacted under the late dictator Gen. Francisco Franco. The current law allows information to be kept secret forever, but the new legislation would set declassification terms ranging from four to 50 years. That is in line with standards among NATO and European Union member countries. The proposed law sets four levels of secrecy — restricted, confidential, secret and top secret. The final decision on whether to release the top secret information would remain in the hands of the  government. Information ranked as restricted, confidential or secret could be reclassified by ministers and other high-ranked officials, including military authorities.

Germany’s narrow loss to England in the Women's European Championship final may yet prove more beneficial for women’s soccer in the country than another title would have been. The team has been given a heroes’ welcome back in Frankfurt, where thousands of flag-waving fans turned up in front of the city hall to show their appreciation for coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg and her players. Chloe Kelly’s goal in extra time denied Germany a ninth European title and gave England its first. But Germany’s run to the final stoked great excitement among fans. The hope is that it will help grow the number of female players.

For weeks, access to abortion in Louisiana has been flickering — with the state’s three clinics relying on rulings and temporary restraining orders that allowed them to continue operations. But procedures came to a screeching halt Friday afternoon after an appeals court ruled in favor of Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry and ordered that he be allowed to enforce the ban while ongoing legal challenges play out in court. The clinics are still open, however. Staff members are calling patients to notify them of the ban and urge them to seek resources in other states.

The U.S. Postal Service has announced it will destroy packages of cigarettes sent illegally to the United States from other countries to settle a lawsuit filed by New York City and four states. The city and California had initially filed the lawsuit against the agency in 2019. They were joined in 2020 by Connecticut, Illinois and Pennsylvania. The plaintiffs said the Postal Service wasn’t doing enough to enforce the Prevent All Cigarette Trafficking law of 2010, which prohibits the mailing of cigarettes in most cases. An email was sent to the Postal Service seeking comment.

Harris was suspended with pay until his firing becomes official Aug. 15. Four members of the team filed a Title IX complaint this spring alleging discrimination and unfair treatment. That prompted an immediate investigation. A final report was given to former members of the team. ETSU President Brian Noland said the findings paint a picture of "unconscionable behavior" by Harris. Atlanta Falcons defensive coordinator Dean Pees is making sure his players know he won’t stand for another season like 2021, when Atlanta finished 7-10. Only two NFL teams allowed more points than the Falcons. No team had fewer sacks. The 72-year-old Pees is entering only his second season in Atlanta, but he already has grown tired of seeing the defense underperform. He says he's working on "changing the culture around this ... place.” While much attention has been paid to new quarterbacks Marcus Mariota and Desmond Ridder, the fate of the Falcons could rest with Atlanta's ability to improve on defense.
